Asa’s Allegories is a wonderful book written by Brian Anderson. In this book, Brian uses everyday stories with his daughter to teach spiritual truth. As a parent of a young daughter myself, I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It reminds me of my daily experiences with my princess.
For example, Brian shares about hearing the unexpected news of his wife being pregnant which, though wonderful, was mentally stressful because of finances, and how God used the pregnancy to abundantly bless their lives. Brian dovetails from his allegories into the spiritual significance and the application using verses and stories from the Bible. Listen to how he applied the spiritual story about his wife’s pregnancy:
“My brothers and sisters, when God allows your life to be interrupted with an unexpected blessing or an unexpected trial, loss, or grief that comes in an unexpected way, at an unexpected time, expect Him to work it all out!”
“God often uses our situations, trials, and even His unexpected blessings as a womb for His purpose to be birthed into our lives. A womb can be any place where something is formed or produced.”
Each chapter has sections called Allegory, Significance, Application (probing questions for the reader), and Pray About It (an inspirational prayer).
Brian’s writing is easy to read, spiritually rich, down-to-earth, and witty. To be honest his masterful illustrations and insightful writing reminds me of Reverend Tony Evans, a very well-known preacher/writer. I almost felt like I could hear Tony preaching as I read Brian’s writing. This book is great for devotional reading. It will be a great spiritual primer in the morning, right before bed, or for making the most of your time in the restroom (I know I’m not the only one who does that?). I especially believe married couples with children will enjoy reading it together. Happy readings!
