James Series: How to Resolve Conflict (4:1-3)

How to Resolve Conflict Where do the conflicts and where do the quarrels among you come from? Is it not from this, from your passions that battle inside you? You desire and you do not have; you murder and envy and you cannot obtain; you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask; you ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, so you can spend it on your passions. James 4:1-3 (NET) Why do believers and churches often struggle with conflict? Many Christians have been wounded because of a fight with another believer or a conflict within a church. Some have even become disillusioned with the faith or fallen away from it because of those interpersonal difficulties. Unfortunate

Soteriology Series: The Effectual Call

The Effectual Call The next step in the salvation process is the effectual call. Romans 8:30 says, “And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified.” It is clear that this was not just a hearing of the gospel, often referred to as the general call, but an effectual one because these people responded to the message and were justified—made as though they had never sinned. Wayne Grudem said this about the effectual call: This kind of calling is a summons from the king of the universe; it is a summons that can’t be denied, and it brings about the desired response in people’s hearts. This calling is an act of God the Fath

James Series: God’s Wisdom or Worldly Wisdom? A Test of Faith (3:13-18)

God’s Wisdom or Worldly Wisdom? A Test of Faith Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct he should show his works done in the gentleness that wisdom brings. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfishness in your hearts, do not boast and tell lies against the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and not hypocritical. And the fruit that consists of righteousness is planted in peace among those who make peace. James 3:13-18 (NET

Soteriology Series: Election / Predestination

Election / Predestination Often when considering salvation, people immediately consider the present aspect of salvation—how a person can be delivered from eternal judgment for his sins. However, each person’s salvation begins before time. This is the doctrine of election or predestination. Scripture teaches that before time, God chose some to salvation and passed over others. This is a very difficult doctrine, but it is taught throughout the New Testament. Consider some of the verses: Ephesians 1:4-6 says: For he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world that we may be holy and unblemished in his sight in love. He did this by predestining us to adoption as his sons through Jesus

James Series: How to Control the Tongue (3:1-12)

How to Control the Tongue Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, because you know that we will be judged more strictly. For we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual, able to control the entire body as well. And if we put bits into the mouths of horses to get them to obey us, then we guide their entire bodies. Look at ships too: Though they are so large and driven by harsh winds, they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination directs. So too the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has great pretensions. Think how small a flame sets a huge forest ablaze. And the tongue is a fire! Th
